David T. Clark KD7NZK – Phoenix, AZ

David Clark is an 18 year old freshman who will attend Arizona State University studying Computer Systems Engineering. He holds an Extra class license. David is president of the Explorer Post 599 . His amateur radio interests include APRS, IRLP and contesting.

Elizabeth Albert-Bruninga WE4APR – Glen Burnie, MD

Elizabeth Albert-Bruninga is Andrew’s older sister and will be a junior at Swarthmore College in the fall, majoring in biology. She has been a technician class licensee since 2001 and is active on VHF/UHF FM.

Victor Curtis, KB3BTD – Cheltenham, MD

Victor Curtis is a 21-year old senior studying Computer Science and Engineering at Frostburg State University. He holds a Technician license, and comes from an all-ham family. He is active with the Southern Maryland Amateur Radio Club, and is a previous FAR scholarship winner.

Christa McClenny, KB3JIU – Glenwood, MD

Christa McClenny is an 18 year old sophomore at Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA, pursuing a degree in elementary education. She holds a Technician class license and comes from an all-ham family. She is interested in 6 meter SSB, contesting, and Dxing.

Rebecca Milton, KB3GFG – Sykesville, MD – $1000

Rebecca Milton is a senior with a double major in English and Spanish at Frostburg State University. She holds a Technician class license, and comes from an all-ham family. Ms. Milton has a renewable scholarship, and maintained a 3.93 grade point average last year (4.0 in her major subjects).

Andrew Bruninga is an 18 year old student who will enter Yale University in the fall, interested in studying “science, probably chemistry.” He holds a technician license, first licensed in 2001, and is active on VHF/UHF FM. He was ranked #1 in his high school class and is an eagle scout.

Michael Volz, W2NRL – East Lansing, MI

Michael Volz expects to graduate from Michigan State University next May with a degree in electrical engineering. His interests are in RF/microwave and radar technology. He was a FAR scholarship winner last year, holds an extra class license, and is active with satellite voice/data operating, HF digital modes, and contesting several times a year including field day. He is the president of the MSU Amateur Radio Club.

Tamara Sevier KE5DJZ- Austin, TX

Tamara Sevier was previously awarded the Chichester Scholarship in 2006, and is a 19 year old who will transfer to Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA in the fall. She majors in Environmental Studies, expects to graduate in 2010, and hopes to go on for a PhD in this field. She holds a general class license and has been a ham since 2004. She is active on HF, typically 20 meters. She served as vice president of her LBJ Academy high school radio club, and is unusual among our applicants in having no other family members who are amateurs.

Derek is a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in computer science. His interests lie in the area of digital communications, and he serves as the president of the student chapter of the IEEE at the university. He holds a technician license and operates on 2 meter FM and uses echolink on this band. He is a member of LARC and CARA.

Derek Wood, KB3NXY – Columbia, MD

Derek is a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in computer science. Patricia Dobson, N3DUH – Reisterstown, MD

Patricia is a 19 year old student at Catonsville Community College. She plans to seek a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree to prepare for a career in art education. She holds a General class license, and both of her parents are licensed. Patricia serves as the youth liaison for the Baltimore Amateur Radio Club and the Hanover Area Hamming Association.

HaoQi Li, KI4LJD – Fairfax, VA

HaoQi “Esther” Li is a 19 year old sophomore studying biology and physics at MIT. She holds a General class license. She is the only amateur radio operator in her family. Esther is a previous FAR scholarship winner.

Robert Crook KB3JYR – Monrovia, MD

Robert Crook is a 17 year old graduate of Urbana High School who will enter Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, WV in the fall. He hopes to major in political science with plans to go on to law school. He has held a technician class license since 2003, is active on 2 meter FM and APRS, and is a member of MADXRA. He is interested in public service, has taken emergency services training, and hopes to upgrade to general class and get into PSK and RTTY.

Amy Johnson KB3HXF – New Castle, PA

Amy Johnson is a graduate student seeking a master’s degree in Instructional Leadership and Sports Management at Robert Morris University, Moon Township, PA. She earned her BS degree in Education at Geneva College, Beaver Fall, PA in 2007. She comes from an all-amateur family, has been licensed since 2002, presently holds an extra class license, and is a VE. She is active on VHF/UHF FM. In 2007 she received NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete honors, and hopes to teach and coach women’s softball at a high school or small college.

Patricia Ward KB3QLI – Pittsburgh, PA

Patricia Ward is a May graduate of Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh, and at the time of this writing, is deciding between American University or the University of Pittsburgh for fall enrollment. She plans to study International Affairs or Public Affairs, with an eye to a career in international diplomacy or non-profit organizations. She recently earned a technician class license and is interested in DX’ing and contesting.

Benjamin R. Frye, KI4BAW – Roanoke, VA

Benjamin Frye is an 18 year old junior at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, majoring in Computer Science. He holds a technician class license and operates SSB on 10 meters and on all VHF/UHF bands up through 23cm. He was a founder and officer of his high school’s radio club.

Rebecca Rich, KB0VVT – Raytown, MO

Rebecca Rich is a 19 year old who will be a junior this fall majoring in electrical engineering at MIT. She holds an Extra class license and has been licensed since 1996. Her parents are both hams. Presently she is active on SSB and CW on the HF bands, and is a member of the Raytown Amateur Radio Club, Kansas City DX Club, YLRL, and the MIT W1MX society. Her interests include contesting such as Field day, ARRL sweepstakes and WPX contests.

Alex Brech KC0YLD – Curie, MN

Alex Brech is a 19 year old sophomore at the South Dakota School of Mines majoring in Computer Engineering, with a 4.0 grade point average in his first year. He holds an extra class license, is active on 2 meters, is a member of the SDSM&T radio club and the Black Hills Amateur Radio Club, and has helped construct a J-pole antenna and tune the university club’s 6 meter yagi.

Natalie Harding, KC9KIR – Burlington, WI

Natalie Harding is now a 19 year old who will enter her sophomore year at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, in the fall. She continues her interest in anthropology and plans to add a minor in Arabic. She holds a Technician class license.

Steven Hughes KI4EBV – Brighton, TN

Stephen Hughes is a 19 year old entering his sophomore year at the University of Tennessee, Martin. His major is in Music Education, and he has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average so far. He holds an extra class license, having been first licensed as a technician in 2004, and is active on 2 meters and 17 meters SSB. He is also active in Boy Scouts, and is an Eagle Scout.

Steven R. Chimel, KA3SRC – Clarks Summit, PA

Steven Chimel is a 21 year old student attending Penn State, Worthington Campus, expecting to graduate next year with a degree in Information Technology. This is the second consecutive year that he has been selected for this scholarship. He has maintained a very strong grade point average of over 3.9 every year, comes from an all-ham family, holds a general class license, and has done satellite operation in addition to the usual VHF/UHF FM. He serves as VP, treasurer and secretary of the Elk Mt. Radio Society, is a member of the Scranton Pocono Amateur Radio Club and is active in ARES, Skywarn, and the Boy Scouts.

Diana Mitchell KB3QDW – Mechanicsburg, PA

Diana Mitchell is an 18 year old who will enter Drexel University in the fall, with interest in health careers such as physical therapy. She holds an extra class license and is active on 2 meters and HF, favoring the 20 meter band. She has served as secretary of the Amateur Radio Club of Trinity, her high school and has constructed a 40 meter QRP kit and assisted with her club’s antennas.

Bryce T. Salmi, KB1LQC – Chelmsford, MA

Mr. Salmi is an 18 year old sophomore at the Rochester Institute of Technology majoring in electrical engineering. He holds an Extra class license and works 20 and 40 meter CW, 2 meters when biking or hiking, and QRP in the field. He is a member of the Billerica Amateur Radio Society, the Police Amateur Radio Society of Westford, the New England QRP club, and was a founder and president of the Chelmsford High School club.

Grant Morine W4GHM – Wilmington, NC

Mr. Morine is an 18 year old who will enter as a freshman at the University of North Carolina in the fall. He is interested in Government and Politics, and plans to go on to law school. He was named the ARRL 2007 Young Ham of the Year for his work on an eagle scout project designing and constructing indoor emergency back-up antennas for hospitals and red cross chapters in North Carolina. He is active in public service communications.

Mr. Oi is a 19 year old sophomore at the University of Tennessee majoring in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Japanese. He has an extra class license and is active on HF SSB dx’ing. He is a VE and has constructed compact antenna systems and a Ten-tec transceiver kit.

Wes Randles Memorial Scholarship ($1100)
Brenton J. Salmi, KB1LQD – Chelmsford, MA

Like his twin brother, Mr. Salmi is an 18 year old sophomore at the Rochester Institute of Technology majoring in electrical engineering. He holds a General class license and is active on 20 and 40 meter CW, 20 meter SSB, and 2 meters. He is a member of the Billerica Amateur Radio Society and was a founder and has also been president of the Chelmsford High School club. He has constructed several kits, including a Ramsey 40M CW transmitter, a Ten-Tec 20m CW transceiver, and a Tiny Trak APRS beacon.

Nicholas Bauer KC9GZY – Bloomington, IN

Mr. Bauer is a 19 year old sophomore at Indiana University studying Accounting and Finance, and planning to go on for an MBA. He is active dx’ing from his club station, is a severe weather spotter, and served as president of his high school’s radio club.

Mr. Ellis is an 18 year old sophomore at North Carolina State University seeking a degree in Engineering with interest in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. He holds a General class license and is a member of the Opossum Trot Net. He is active on 2 meters. In high school he was a Quiz Bowl participant for 2 years and was the captain of the Math Competition team.

William Joshua Fisher, W4WJF – Vale, NC

Mr. Fisher is a 20 year old senior at North Carolina State University with a 4.0 grade point average, majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He holds an extra class license and is active on SSB on 2, 6, 10, and 20 meters. He enjoys operating VHF contests.

Kyle Fox W4KTF – Warrenton, VA

Mr. Fox is an 18 year old who will start in the fall at Cederville University, Cederville, OH. He plans to major in electrical engineering and is interested in communications systems. He holds an extra class license and has participated in field day every year since 2004. He has constructed an 8 element 2 meter Quagi and an FM transmitter kit.

Catherine Jones KI4EVA – Vinton, VA

Ms. Jones is 17 year old who will start at Old Dominion University in the fall. She is interested in technology education and high school teaching. She was president of her high school radio club and a member of the Roanoke Valley club and 10-10. She is active on SSB on VHF and 10 meters.

Blake McCabe KC2GQX – Vestal, NY

Ms. McCabe is an 18 year old who will enroll this fall as a freshman at Mansfield University, Mansfield, PA. She plans to major in music, with the goal of teaching. She is a general class operator who was first licensed in 2000. She is a past secretary of the Binghamton Amateur Radio Club and is active in emergency communications.

Wayne McNamar KD7PVY – Everett, WA

Mr. McNamar is an adult student who has gone back to seek an AAS degree in Computer Network Systems from the ITT Technical Institute, Everett, WA. He has a 3.97 grade point average for the past 2 years and expects to complete in 2010. He is active on VHF/UHF FM and is involved in emergency communications and packet radio applications.

Reid Morine W4RSM – Wilmington, NC

Mr. Morine, age 18, is the older brother of Grant Morine, above. He will be a junior at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington majoring in Business Administration. He is active on 2 meter FM and has been active with Boy Scouts.

Sabra Perry KD7JPR – Sweet Home, OR

Ms. Perry is an 18 year old sophomore at the Oregon Institute of Technology, studying Nursing. She is a general class licensee who was first licensed in 2000, and is active on HF SSB and VHF/UHF FM. She was a regular net control for the Linn County ARES group.

Matthew Poppe, AD7HF – Spokane Valley, WA

Mr. Poppe is a 19 year old junior studying mechanical engineering at Washington State University. He was president of his high school radio club, has built some small kits, and is active on 2 meter FM emergency communications.

Sarah Schneider-Firestone KB3QJR – Columbia, MD

Ms Schneider-Firestone is an adult student pursuing a Masters of Social Work degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She has a BS degree from the University of Maryland and has 2 meter FM equipment.

Stephen M. Sciarini, KC8IDJ – Dover, OH

Mr. Sciarini is a 22 year old senior who expects to graduate from the University of Akron in May 2009 with a degree in Computer Science. He is active on 2 meters and with PSK31. He enjoyed completing the assembly of a Heathkit HW9 that he obtained partially assembled at a hamfest. He has also built an LC meter and Morse keyer, and assisted with a repeater system.

Stephen T. Simpson, KC8IOY – Ocala, FL

Mr. Simpson is a 17 year old headed to the University of Florida next fall after home schooling and earning Associate’s degrees at Central Florida Community College. He holds a General class license and is active on digital modes as well as VHF FM. He is the webmaster for the Friendship Amateur Radio Club and is in ARES.

Mr. Fisher is a 20 year old senior at North Carolina State University with a 4.0 grade point average, majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He holds an extra class license and is active on SSB on 2, 6, 10, and 20 meters. He enjoys operating VHF contests.

Caleb Braff KC0FKO – St Paul, MN

Caleb Braff is a 22 year old junior at the University of Minnesota majoring in electrical engineering. He is active on 2 meter FM and is a member of the Northern Lakes ARC, having served in the past as secretary, treasurer, and newsletter editor. He is active also in the SKYWARN weather spotter program and emergency communications. He has constructed adjustable voltage power supplies and a 40 meter vertical antenna, and is currently working on a mobile APRS system.

Chris Renfrow KD7TDC – Ellensburg, WA

Chris Renfrow is a 17 year old who will enter either the University of Idaho or Washington State University in the fall, planning to major in Science Education. First licensed as a technician in 2002, he currently holds a general class license and is active on SSB and CW on the HF bands, 6 meters, and 2 meters. He enjoys chasing DX “almost every weekend”, SSB contesting “three per year” and is a member of his county ARES. He has built several antennas and a morse keyer. He is also active in Boy Scouts, teaching amateur radio at a camp in the summer.

James Dunn is an 18 year old who will enter the University of Kansas in the fall, with interest in Business and International Communications. He has been active in club activity, serving as field day coordinator, APRS chairman, webmaster, and net control for three clubs. He is active on HF and VHF/UHF regularly, has APRS capability, and helps with public service events. He was recommended by KC0BS, 10-10 #45071.

Francis T. Gradijan, KD5HTB -Carrollton, TX

Francis Gradijan is a 22 year old recent graduate from the University of Scranton, who plans to enter the University of Texas Law School in the fall. He is active on HF and 6 meters SSB, and is a member of the North Texas Microwave Society. . He is a 10-10 member #70925.

Nathaniel Heatwole, WZ3AR – Pittsburgh, PA

Nathaniel Heatwole is a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, studying for a PhD in Engineering and Public Policy. He is active in contesting and is a member of the Potomac Valley Radio Club and Worldwide Young Contesters. He was recommended by Peter Altman, W2CDO, 10-10 #6773.

Jacob Wagner KD8CDC – Rocky River, OH

Jacob Wagner is an 18 year old who will enter Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland OH this fall, planning to study Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry. He holds an Extra class license and is active on HF and VHF bands. He enjoys contesting and seeking awards. He is a 10-10 member #74706.

Nathan Hager is an 18 year old who will enter either the Missouri University of Science, Rolla MO, or the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, AK in the fall, planning to major in Computer Engineering. He is a technician class licensee and is active on 2 meter FM. He is interested in emergency communications, and is a member of the San Bernardino-Riverside Section of SATERN (Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network) and has build 20 meter portable antennas for this group.

Thomas Christovich KB3HUR – Baltimore, MD

Thomas Christovich is a 17 year old who will enter UMBC as a freshman in the fall, interested in studying computer engineering. He has held a technician class license since 2002 and is active on VHF/UHF FM, including public service such as assisting with the scouting’s Jamboree on the Air. He built and tested several 2 meter antennas for a school project, enjoys building and repairing computers, and did varsity indoor track and field in high school.

Josh Young is a 17 year old recent high school graduate who will enroll this fall in Campbell University, Bules Creek, NC, seeking a degree in Criminal Justice. He then hopes for a career as a police officer or FBI agent. He was first licensed as a technician in 2007 and now holds an extra class license.

Patrick Weeks is a 21 year old student at Grove City College, Grove City, PA, majoring in Business Economics and Finance, and expecting to graduate next May. He was first licensed in 1999 as a novice and now holds an extra class license. He has an ICOM HT but is inactive at this time. He participated in Field Day last summer as a mobile.

Stephanie Schaefer is a 19 year old who will be a junior this fall studying elementary and middle school education at Marywood University in Scranton, PA, with interest in teaching mathematics and music. She holds a General class license. Stephanie is active on 2 meter FM and HF SSB. She is a Red Cross Professional Rescuer, and also enjoys swimming and girl scouting and plays in her college orchestra.
