About FAR
The Foundation for Amateur Radio, Inc., originally known as the Foundation of Amateur Radio Clubs, was
organized in July 1957 and incorporated under the laws of the
District of Columbia as a non-profit organization. The following
clubs became charter members:
-
Northern Virginia Radio Club (fomerly Falls Church Radio Club)
- Potomac Valley Radio Club
- Rock Creek Amateur Radio Club
- Washington Area YL Radio Club
- Washington Mobile Radio Club
- Washington Radio Club
In 1960, minor changes were made to the Articles of Incorporation and
the Foundation was re-incorporated under the name "Foundation for
Amateur Radio, Inc."
The Foundation is now composed of approximately
50 clubs and organizations in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia,
West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Under the
By-Laws, each participating club has two
Representatives to FAR but only a single vote. The Foundation has
an Executive Committee, which consists of the President, Executive
Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary and Vice
Presidents that are appointed by the President.
FAR's scholarship program is one of the largest for amateur
radio licensees in the United States. FAR also produced F.A.R.Fest — its annual hamfest, conference, and
fundraiser — held the first weekend after Labor Day in
Gaithersburg, Maryland. At that site in 1958, FAR sponsored
American Radio Relay League National Convention. In 1962, FAR
sponsored the ARRL Atlantic Division Convention.
The purpose of FAR is to further amateur radio in all of its various
facets. FAR sponsors training, seminars, and other events of its own
or of its members, in support of amateur radio.
